New Delhi, August 14, 2024: The All India Football Federation (AIFF) has announced plans to organize two charity football matches to aid ongoing relief efforts in Kerala and Himachal Pradesh. The initiative, spearheaded by AIFF President Kalyan Chaubey, aims to raise funds and awareness for the states, both of which have been ravaged by devastating natural disasters.
The first charity match is scheduled to take place on August 30, 2024, in Manjeri, Malappuram, Kerala. The historic Kolkata-based club, Mohammedan Sporting Club, has graciously agreed to participate in this benefit match against a specially assembled Super League Kerala XI.
The second match is proposed to be held on September 2, 2024, in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh. Details regarding the participating clubs are still being finalized by the AIFF.
Kerala is grappling with the aftermath of a massive landslide in Wayanad, while Himachal Pradesh is facing fresh floods and landslides due to relentless rains. The charity matches are part of AIFF’s broader efforts to contribute to the relief and rehabilitation of affected communities in these states.
Expressing his gratitude, Kalyan Chaubey said, “I’m happy that one of India’s oldest clubs, Mohammedan Sporting, immediately agreed to our proposal for the cause of humanity. We are also in advanced conversations with two clubs for the Lucknow match.”
Chaubey further emphasized the importance of sports in healing and supporting communities during times of crisis. “Sports is a powerful medium to offer comfort and heal humanity after such tragedies. We often celebrate cups won by clubs; let’s now come together to raise the cup of solidarity.”
A study by the University of Memphis highlights the significant role that sports can play in disaster relief efforts, from donations and emotional support to spreading awareness and enabling psychological recovery. The AIFF’s initiative underscores the vital role sports can play in uniting communities and offering support during difficult times.
Fans are encouraged to come out in large numbers to support these matches and contribute to the relief efforts for Kerala and Himachal Pradesh.
